- Children’s Literature-encourage a love of reading and develop emergent reading skills such as correct use of a book, one-to-one correspondence, and ability to track print.
- Oral Language taught through discussions, questioning, flannel stories, songs, nursery rhymes and finger play
- Phonics-introduce letter recognition and beginning sounds
- Shapes-Recognize, trace, and begin drawing-circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star, heart, diamond, oval

- The Letter People curriculum-teaches phonics, recognition of upper and lower case letters, and beginning sounds
